Show for it seemed the natural thing to be with them. But he did not become dependent on such habits since his business and a beckoning goal were always uppermost in his mind. Being a modest man, John K was almost retiring in nature. He was a common-sense man and believed the words of Benjamin Franklin that "Small leaks can sink a ship", and "A penny saved is a penny earned." He practiced those sayings too, and by being conservative in small ways he was able to enjoy more than he could otherwise have afforded. He was generous to a fault in many large ways --even paying property taxes for someone dear to him in order to save a home. It would be next to impossible to enumerate his generosities. Respected by most men who knew him, John K, on rare occasions, felt the brunt of petty resentments and jealousies while he steadily plodded toward success in his chosen field. Such situations failed to really bother him for he believed, and said, "What I do is all that concerns me, and not what people think." There was never much time in his life for fun as most young folks understood fun to be. When he had the time, as he grew older, he enjoyed a game of sluff, and he also liked a game of pool. But because his business held top priority in his life neither cards nor billiards became a serious habit of his. He could play if he had an opportunity to do so, or he could go for months on end and never miss either game. 70 |
