Show MILLER* S FLAT It was deeded land and had been owned by John H. Seely and Sons. It was sold in a foreclosure sale by a Salt Lake City bank. Miller's Flat included more than 1900 acres of fee land, and that fine grazing area adjacent to John K's Staker-Jordan allottment provided an excellent summer range for his sheep. Of the 1980 acres in Miller's Flat, 247 acres of it were in lush meadow grass. John K planned with his men to reserve that meadow for late summer feeding when higher camp- 27 sites were threatened with snow- On one September 17th in the 1930's an early snowstorm began a continuous falling while the sheep were feeding on the high plateau area near the Keg Camp. The sheep were being tended by Heber Anderson who wisely left them where they were during the storm. After it subsided, he looked out over the herd, completely covered with a three day fall of snow. The only indication of sheep even being there was when one or another of them would shake it3elf and scatter the accumulation of snow. When the storm was over Heber wallowed through the snow to the lower edge of the bed-ground where he managed to start a few sheep on a downward trail, even through the deep snow. Sheep instinctively know where the best feed may be growing on the ranges in any given season, and having once grazed an area they never forget it. 233 |
