Show was cleared, caring for animals, scything and stacking hay seemed to demand continual attention. Most of the heavy work attendant to the improvement was accomplished with the use of oxen. Since John K was his mother's oldest living son, she relied on him for the major portion of all such work. After they permanently returned to live in the Bottoms more school for him was out of the question, so those two mid-winter months of but four years were final-and the rest of his education necessarily came to him through his work experiences. MOMENTS OF RECOMPENSE When at last Wilhelmina had a house she could call her own, she was deeply grateful for it. Having been continually on the move during her trek to Utah and to Sanpete--and periodically living in or moving from one little cabin to another since her arrival-she was conditioned to a fuller appreciation for stability than she may have been under different circumstances. Even the rough and in many respects unfinished interior parts of the house were compensated for by the additional space it provided for her family. And she realized that although the clay and alkali soil of the homestead seemed unbearable at times, there was some recompense in the overpowering moments of beauty afforded by nature-even in the poorest meadowland. 36 |
