Show grower's cost of handling the wool delivery to the market. The sheepmen resented their treatment because they were forced in many cases to feed hay that had risen in price by 400 to 500 per cent, and it appeared that the woolgrowers had been singled out for discrimination.20 Following the end of the war there were intricate details involved in the phasing out of the government's huge stockpile of wool-780 million pounds. The government sold the wool in a series of auctions that provided a price gauge on the trend of the market. Some growers were able to sell their wool for about five cents a pound higher than that of the government wool price.2 1 British wool held in this country was auctioned also, and prices were generally good with some Utah growers benefiting by contracting at sixty cents. But suddenly, stagnation hit the markets at home and abroad. The financial pendulum that had been pushed too far suddenly swung back, as there had been too much business done on amounts of available cash. In its logical way, the National Wool Grower Association started a campaign for restoring the wool tariff to stimulate help for the sheepmen. It seemed that the moment they experienced even a small benefit, events usually shaped 22 around to create a new situation to their detriment.
