Show JOHN K'S POLITICS John K was fiercely loyal to the Republican party. He failed to understand how any man could be otherwise if he were dependent upon a protective tariff. He did not seek political office in his party, and when such a suggestion was made to him, he turned it aside, feeling his lack of fluency might handicap his party. He preferred to give support to men he considered more qualified for office. Throughout years of association with a neighbor sheepman, S. M. Nielsen was admired and respected by John K so much that when Mr. Nielsen was running for the office of Sanpete County Commissioner, John K attended the Democratic caucus or mass meeting to let his friend know he supported him. S. M. appreciated that friendly gesture, and at the age of 85 years, expressed his feelings on the matter to Pearl, the oldest daughter of John K. THE BIG SIGN Soon after 1930 an itinerant called on John K in Mt. Pleasant and asked for a painting job. During their conversation they decided that to paint a large roadside sign would be a novel and informative thing to do. John K had toyed with the idea of doing something of the sort to help direct ram buyers to his ranch. They sometimes drove north rather than south after arriving at Thistle when approaching from the east via Price, 237 |
