Show of Ephraim on the banks of Pleasant Creek where they established the nucleus of what would later become the town of Mt. Pleasant, in Sanpete County. Niels Peter was very early involved in the Blackhawk Indian War, participating in guarding and in expeditions of pursuit in the wake of Indian depredations and physical as S a^u Its orr -s e-t trl e r s . On 3 January 1857, Niels Peter married Carolena (Lena) Frandsen, and nine children were later born to them. On 2 January 1864, he married Marie Wilhelmina Catherine Krause as his plural wife. She bore him ten children, two of whom died in childhood. Niels Peter Madsen was one of five city councilmen in the first city organization when Mt. Pleasant was granted a charter by the Utah Legislature 20 February 1868, and he served for three terms. He participated with four other men in bringing the first imported threshing machine to Mt. Pleasant. He was one of a group of men to organize a cooperative store-Mt. Pleasant Z.C.M.I.~-he being one of the seven principal inventors Niels Peter was also one of the main stockholders in the first steam saw mill in the county--located in the mountains east of Mt. Pleasant. On 2 November 1878, Niels Peter Madsen was appointed B.ishop of the North Ward in Mt. Pleasant, an office he held for twelve years. |
