Show years of a frontier Sanpete town-in this case, Mt. Pleasant. And I can offer my knowledge of important facts regarding it, as well as information I have found through research. Parts of John K's story came from material left by him; various papers and letters, certificates of marriage and membership, records and notes, and papers of value to his mother-even her Certificate of Citizenship. From this material that he preserved, his character emerges more than any words I could write to recreate his image. Nothing about his biography is fictitious. From my earliest remembrance, I heard accounts of family happenings that became a part of my life, yet I have not relied on memory alone, for I have made extensive use of family and business research as well, As I studied my files, I absorbed and gained understanding and more appreciation of John K, and have tried to recreate his life as I knew it to be. Although he was but one sheep breeder of note and his life was individualistic, some of the problems John K faced when he was young would have been typical of other youngsters' problems of his time. The struggles he later encountered on the range, in financial matters, in establishing his own business and maintaining it were also shared, in part, by contemporary sheepmen in his period of time. If this biography contains a portion of joy in accomplishment, of built-in faith and fresh determination in meeting |
