Show he resumed spring work with the sheep. On 20 June, 1899, John K and Katie were married in Manti, the county seat of Sanpete. According to their wedding 1 certificate, Elder Andrew Thompson, Jr., performed the ceremony. Witnesses were Adolph W. Jensen and Gunner Gunderson, the husband of John K's oldest sister. 2 On small wedding invitations a design of silver wedding bells and ribbons dressed the name of the bride and groom. The invitation read: "You are cordially requested to be present at a Wedding Dance to be given in honor of the marriage of John K. Madsen and Katie Whitlock Wednesday, June 21, 1899 at the Union Pavilion Mt. Pleasant, Utah Dancing at 8 o'clock IN RETROSPECT That Union Pavilion represented the great progress Mt. Pleasant had made during its forty years of existence. By that year of 1899, it had grown up in a very real sense. Grain was produced in the area to such an extent that it was freighted east by way of Thistle when the D&RG Railroad reached that point. Sanpete farmers also supplied farm products to mining and railroad construction camps. In fact, the county of Sanpete was termed the breadbasket of Utah. Eggs and other products were freighted to Salt Lake in wagons where they were sold for farm implements and more wagons which were 73 |
