ENDURANCE PANGS The woolen industry was one of the most important sources of the government's internal revenue at the time (1865) when this new organization was effected. The first executive officers of the National Wool Growers Association were all from New York., Ohio, and Vermont, and the body of vice presidents was made up of the various state association presidents. The official list of names was an impressive one, many of them being professional men; but Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois were the most western states included. The states west of g those were still raw and forming. Cleveland, Ohio, saw the second convention of the Association on 14-15 of November 1866. Financing the organization was the most important item of discussion, for 9 the association struggled constantly to exist. By 189.5 it was still endeavoring to solve financial problems. The president wrote a "Sad Story" letter to the secretary of the Association claiming he had spent a solid month in effort toward association interests, that he had never receiyed a dollar for his time, and had used more than a thousand dollars of his own money in furthering the work of the association.
