Show CHAPTER THREE: FAMILY INTERESTS 'Mack" and "Dewey" were the names of John K's main team of work horses in the early years of his sheep business. Since no record was left of names by which other teams were called, they have been forgotten. Dan was a white buggy horse, acquired about 1905, but he served as a saddle horse as well, and became a family favorite because of his mild dispostion. Cap, another white horse, was sometimes teamed with Dan to draw a surrey type buggy, or a buckboard. Ginger was a white saddle horse-~so named for his vim and vigor, and gingerly disposition. A bay saddle pony was named Nickel. About 1912 John K bought a beautiful sorrel buggy-horse, tall, rangy, and quick stepping. It was sheer poetry to see the rhythm with which King drew the new shiny buggy John K enjoyed using. Whenever Virginia drove across the Valley to see her mother in Freedom, she did not favor driving King but usually drove Dan because he was more gentle. 159 |
