Show encourage Indian depredations under Chief Black Hawk. The resulting Black Hawk Indian Peace Treaty was signed at that time. Some raids and massacres followed, stemming from raids of renegade Indians as well as renegade white men. But there was a gradual cessation of hostilities, ending the Indian troubles permanently. TOWN DEVELOPMENT Mt. Pleasant became an incorporated city on 20 February, 1868, through an act of the Utah Legislature, and the first municipal election was held the following May 5th. And later, Sanpete County elected its first Senator-W. D. Candland, on the Republican ticket (1895). Tanneries and shoe shops in the tiny town provided footwear for the earliest residents. A planing mill, flour mill, saddlery, and various small shops enabled people to buy necessities. A molasses mill supplied sweets, at least a portion of them, for several men engaged in the bee-keeping business. And then the Mt. Pleasant Z.C.M.I. was organized after the pattern of the Salt Lake Store, established the previous year (1869). The local store began business in a small room of a log building on the east side of State Street and Third South.
