Show 5014 Johnson- D 3027 Q Whereabouts was that? A About a mile and a half or two miles up the river. Q From Lees Ferry? A Yes. Q Did they have a chain of some kind they used on the Spencer? A Drug a one- hundred- foot chain made out of five- eighths inch iron, and they had to come down backwards and let this chain drag from the front, order to hold them from spinning around in the whirlpools and getting on the sandbars; then they got on a sandbar. They always came down backwards, dragging this long chain in the sand. Whenever they stopped, they had to immediately take that chain in, or it would get in the sand and lose it. They lost two chains that way. Q On this trip that you made with the Stanton boats up there in 1898, did you find the better water above or below Warm creek? A Better water was below Warm creek. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q What do you mean by that? I mean, what do you mean by better water? A Not so many rapids and swift water. BY MR.
