A Went down the river on the down trip invariably on the barge boat of the Moab Garage, which was then hauling considerable material down the river. Q On those down trips were you delayed any? A The majority of the trips we had trouble with sand-bars; it was the exception when we did not. Q Did this boat or barge carry some kind of equipment for getting off of sandbars? A Yes, they had a winch with a tow line which they carried ashore when they would get stuck, to pull the boat off with. Q Have you seen that winch in operation? A Yes. Q A number of times? A A great number of times. Q How did you make the trip up the stream? A During the months referred to, of January, February and March, except possibly two or three times, the up trip always got off the boat on the east side of the river about a mile and a half or two miles above camp, and walked into Moab instead of riding the boat. Q Why did you do that? A Because it was quicker, and saved time; it was not |
