Show 4848 Taylor- D 2861 thing before noon; he tried to go forward and back up, churn the wheel. He made a few tries. Couldn't get it off. He said, " Well, it's dinner time anyway, we will cook dinner." So he cooked the dinner, and while we were eating the boat floated off. In other words, the sand probably had shifted under it, and the action of the wheel had caused the sand probably to shift. Q Do you recall about what time you got to the well? A This was in the winter time; it struck me as being rather late. I imagine it was 3: 30. In that canyon it was almost sundown. Q Why did you walk back from down there? A I was with the mining editor of the Salt Lake Tribune. He was anxious to get back that night to file a report. We had to walk back, because the barge wasn't going back, and we had no other boat. Q Which side of the river did you walk back on? A Walked back on the east side. We got a small motor boat to take us up there about a mile where the trail hits the river; then we walked up the trail. Q Does that trail run right along the river? A No sir; the trail where it strikes the river above the well takes up over a high cliff; cuts off I imagine five or six miles of distance. |
