Show 4879 Dugan- D 2992 three trips a month down to the Lockhart camp, and the larger part of the time I was running my own boat, but not entirely. Part of the time some of the men working for me at Lockhart was running the boat, and I was merely a passenger. So, really, the time I drove the boat I wouldn't attempt to say. Q Was it sufficiently frequent that you became well acquainted with the river? A I gathered considerable information; whether I was as familiar with the river as others, I don't know. Q When you were operating this boat yourself, did you make any observations with reference to any changes in the channel, of and if so, what were they? A The channel changed very rapidly, which is characteristic of the river, and from trip to trip had to be very careful, watching the water for your channel; where you had gone the day before, very liable to be grounded the following day. Q Did that condition continue, generally, all the time you were operating there? A It held generally true. Q Did you make any observations with reference to whether or not the stage of the water changed, and if so, what were your observations in that connection? A The water level of the river changes up and down. |
