The fecond C/ufius maketh his Althea Pannomica {ec#ada,as I think, but is his third in his Hiftory, according to Bathinys, who calleth it Adthea flore majore,of Cames varius Althea flore grandi Alcea, & Althea Thuringica. the third Lacobus Cornutuys expreffeth in his Hiftory of Canada plants under the fametitle here. The fourth Bashinus onelyfetceth forth under the name of Althea fru« tefcens Bryonie folio. Thefiftis called Ababilon Avicenne of Axguillara; Matthiolus, Dodons ms and Camercrins, of Lobel Althea floribys luteis ; Ge(ner in hortis Germanie calleth it Althea peregrina, as alfo Althea Theophraffi ; but Pova inhis Pralian defcription of Afont Baldus, contefteth againft thoferhatcall it Abwrilon Avicenne, faying that it is butan A/thea paluftris, witha yellow flower, in that Avicen attributeth to his Abutilon or Arbutilon, the leafe of a Gourd which hefaith this hath not, and the fruit long, likea Medlar, (where as this isround) and not long ; Dodoneus likewifle contendeththatit cannot be the yellow Althea of Theophraftus, becaule the rootes of his A4thea, will condenfate water, whichthe rootesofthis will not. The fixt, (amerarins who had the -feede fent him, from 7o/éph de cafa bona, chiefe Herbarift to the Duke of Tu/canie or Florence, by the name of Abstilon Indscum, dothfo call italfo, faying it may be referred to the A/thea’s: the feventh is thought to be the Sida of Theophraftus, which he mentioneth inhis 4. Bookeand 11, Chapter, for Camerarizs calleth it Sida velgo, but Dodoneus is againtt that opinion for in reciting the text ofTheophraftws, he fheweth that Theophraftus maketh his Sida, tobe an herve growing within the water, and lifting up the leaves above the water, and bowing downethe headafter it hath done flowring unto the water againe, whichthis doth not : fometherefore thinke that Yheophraftus meaneththe Nymphea Untea, or yellowwaterLillie, whichhath the like propertie, andthe rather becaufe it is a water herbe asall know, and that Theophraffus mentioning thofe plants that growin the famous lake of Orchomenis maketh no mention of waterLillies, which asit is thought, that lake is not without ; the chiefe repugnancy mayfeeme to be in the colour of the flower, which yet he plainely mentioneth nor, but Cytins not inthe forme ; Dodoneus therefore calleth it Althea horienfis five peregrina, and Lobel Althea paluftris flore as doe, and Banhinus Althea paluftris, The eight is that Althea arborea, that Pea and Lobelfet forth to growin Provence in Frauce neere Olbia, and differeth from C/afizs his Althea frutex fecunda({et forth in my fora fo doth mer Book as he doth plainely fhewin his Hiftorie of plants,Camerarius calleth it Althea arbore/cens.and Tabermontanus, Lugdunenfis enrendeth the firft of Clafivs which hee nameth Althea lignofa Dalechampij, having round leaves and a white flowergreater than the common Althea; for Bashinws makethhis fourth and fifth.Adchea frute/cens, to differ from themfelves, naming his fourth A/thea frate/cens, foliorotundiore incana, and referrethit to Clu/ius his Adthe a frutex prima, inhis Hiltory of plants, which C/«fims faith himfelfe is not the fame that Lobel calleth Althea arborea Olbie ; but maketh his fifth A/thea frute/cens,folio acuto parvofore tobe Lobel his Althea arborea, which Camerarius alfo doth acknowledge, calling it Althea arbore{cens, yet Lobel would feeme to make them borhone. The laftiscalledby C/mfins Althea frutex tertia, differing from both the former forts, for C/ufiws there faith the fede came tohim from Candy, and grew onelyin his friends garden, to whomhe imparted it.
