True hedge Hyffope. This hearbe is but a {mall low plant, feldome growing with his flender bending foure {quare branches, above a foote high; having diverfe {mall leaves fet thereon, very like unto thofe of the ordinary garden Hyflope, buta little fhorter and broader, and ofa pale greene colour, ofa very bitter unpleafanttalte : from about the middle ofthefe branches,at the joynts ofthe leavesup to the toppes ofthem,comeforth the flowers,every one at a place, ftanding upoa very hort footeftalkes, which are fomewhat long and hollow, ending in fonre leaves, two of the loweft ftanding out asit were lippes, and the other twoabove,fhorter by the halfe, of a whitith yellow colour, tending toa blacke blew, and fometimes more blewith or purple : after which come {mall whereinis conteined {mall feede : the roote fhooteth forth tooand fro under ground very mych,round heads, with many joyntsand {mall fibres at them, thereby encreafing and quickly fpreading largely, efpecially if it and in any moyt place, becanfe it will hardly hold long in any dry ground. : Camerarins faith he found bya brookefide, not farre from Geneva one of this kind witha yellow flower,not differing in any thing elfe. 2. Noneof thefe hearbesare mentioned by any of the an cient Greeke or Latine writers, nor of Phinye, The firlt is generally now adayes, as it was formerly called Gratiolz by Marthiolus, Gefner, Dodonaus, Lobel, Lugdunenfis,and others ; itis alfo called by fome Gratia Dei, after the high Detch name Gotts gad, which fignifieth fo much; yer fomecallit Gratia Dei alrera, becaufe there is aioched herbeamong the Gerania fo called: Anguillara thought it might be the Papaver (pumeum ofDiofcorides: the feedé hereofis called ashee faith Gilbenech.
