Rdifiratiépis as to Helpiration, I conceive it for the molt part a natural aéfi. :;.,st(ili:‘ixiji- on,And [eldom receiving a {top from the Will, which if done at any time, iifinvitiiiirtm is quickly remitted, and is celebrated by the motion of the Lungs, 36th iiiii'ii'flifli by the contraétionsof the intercol'tal Mufclcs, and the Diaphragme. The nigh/ii. intercol‘tal Mtilcles are influenced by Animal Spirits, imparted by Nerves, not derived from the Ccrcbellum, but Medulla Spindle, being a continuation of the Medulla oblngata of the Brain, communicating Nerves to the inter. collal Mufcles; and the motion of the Diaphragme is not produced by the influx of Animal Spirits, propagated from the Ccrebellum, but conveyed From the brachial Nerves, taking their pedigree from the lower Vertebers, fpring. ing out of the Medulla Spinal", the Medulla cerebrz' elongata. But it may he replied in favour of this great Author, That the Tar wagttm fpringing from the Brain, is not the great fountain of thefe involuntary actions of Pullation of the Heart, and Refpirarion, becaufe the intercol‘tal Nerve hathagrear (hare with the Far wagum in the production of thefe natural Motions : To which I take the freedom to fpeak this Reply, That the intercolial Nerve, ( as Tome fay) is a branch of the Tar wagum; but the Author allerteth (as I conceive) more truly, that it deriveth its Origen from the Fifth and Sixth pair of Nerves, out of the Proceflitr annularir, made up of a {mall middle Procels of the @cclumulm of the Cerebellum; To which I argue with this [mow/o, That the Fifth pair proceeding from thence is principally difpenfed into the Eyes, Noltrils, and Mufcles of the Face, and a {mall branch dclcendeth only (which itiolculateth below with the Caudex) to the Tar wgum, to which all?) the ‘ixth pair imparteth another finall Branch, To that the Firlt Origen of the Intercofial Nerve ariling out of the cerebellum, is very final], and the Trunk of it inol‘culating with the Tar wagum, confiilerh principally of the intercofial Nerves, derived from the Spine; and the tirll life of the intercollal Nerve, refemblcth the head of a River, whole original Springs are very finall, and the body of it fwelleth, growing greater with the acceflion of new Rivulets below. The head Stream ofthe Ani« iml Spirits dillilling out of the Ccrcbellum, are conveyed by the {mailer pipes of the Fifth and Sixth pair of Nerves, while the greater torrent of Animal Spirits doth hal‘ten its courfe by the larger Channels oftheintercol'tal Nerves, coming from the Fpine ( the long procefs ofthe Brain ) to the Caudex OfIlIC 'Par exagum, and from thence into the greater Cifierns of the Heart, making HCHAP. L.' The Cerebellum of a Mair, and of other [infirm/rs Aving fet forth a more fullHifiory of the Cerebellum of Man, I Will now thew you a more lhort profpetft, as a Compendium of it, and oithe Cerebella of other Animals, confilting ofdiveti‘e Apartiments, and various Proceiies, as To many fine Landfcips, in which you may fee the great. difierence of that more excellent Cerebellum of Man, from thofe of other Animals. The Cerebellum of a Calf havin this Situation, is compofed of Three {5:522:53 Provinces, one in the middle an Two lateral. ,Iumofacalf‘. The middle Province confilieth of Eight ranks of Procefl"es+, (running tum"; crofs-ways) which are endued with various kinds of irregular Figures. . The lateral Provinces 'l‘ are fiJrniihed with numerous Procelles, obfer- i512". ving no order, not determinate Figure, and begin in a kind of points, and end in larger dimenlions, with rounded Heads. The beginning + as well. as the rel‘t of the Medulla Spinalu, is divi- m. ded into Two equal parts. The Cerebellar" of 21 Lamb (having this pofition) is made up of a midtile, and Two lateral Provinces; The middle Province confil'teth of Four ranks of Provinces. . The Two uppermofl: rows go crofways ‘f‘ and are oblong and crooked. The Two lower ones + are much (hotter, and feem to tend right downward, and have Figures much difl'erent from the Former. _ The lateral tanks 1- have many rowes of Proceiles, endued with different irregular Figures, . ' Part of the Medulla Spizmli/r, 'l‘ divided into Two equal portions by a kind of Fiiiure near the Cerebellum, may be feen the Glendale pinealio‘, 1- and below this Gland may be dilcerned the Natiform Proceiies + which are 7.10 53'. Zl‘ofi'ffl'b; J", 4, M, "mm, H1M if", very large in this Animal. The Teltiiorm Procefl'es + are appendant‘ to the Natiform, and item in to encircle their lower regions, as with a double Arch; frequent pulfations by the alfifiance oi- flelhy Fibres. iii‘id-iiliiii So that this Hypothelis remaineth firm, that the great Fountain of inveIitlnrienils luntary actions, is not derived from the Ccrcbellum alone, but chiefly from rrvt .lcrrrm mleiy [mm the Brain, and the Mednlla Spin/(lit, its appendix emitting great {lore 0 tiitc'mbrl, Wbumm Animal Spirits by the ?ar wagum, confil'ting of Twelve Fibres 5 and [hein‘grf;,y'"">¢ tercoltal Nerves, principally proceeding from Fibres, arife out of the Spine} and are thence communicated to the Heart, intercofial Muicles, Diaphragme' Stomach, and Intefiines; whence are produced the involuntary aaionso Puliatiorr, Refpiration, Coucoétion, and the prottufion of the Cllyle: and the pcrillaltick motion of the Intefiines. The Cerebellar" of a Pigg is compared of Three'pProvinces, a middle 7, ,0, £4, and Two lateral ones. . ' The middle apartiment 1- begins and ends in {mallet Dimenfionsnm a kind of obtufe Cones, and is made up of many Procelfes (running crols-Ways) refernbling a fort of Parallelograms in Figure. The lateral Provinces 1- confift on each fide of Three or Four rowes of ProceiTes, dreiled with difi‘erentvfliapes. _ . , _ 7 Not far from the Cerebellum may be feen the Natiform Proceffes + endued With a kind of orbicular Figure. Above them may be difcovered Tome other medullary Proceiles 1- of the Brain, of different Magnitudes and Figures. CHAP. 'The affix" , V HM us, 4", "a". |
