And now I conceive it worthy our Pains to confider how the motion of . the Chyle and Lymph: is accomplifhed in the Thoracick Duets. ‘ . The motion The Chyle being firlt generated in the Stomach, is thence tranlrnitted 1nOFWCM' to the Inteltines, and afterward received into Origens of the Locke, by the Periftaltick motion of the Guts, and the Contraftion of the Abdominal Mufcles, fqueezing the Chile into the Milky Veflels, which import it through the Mefentety into the common Receptacle, (being lodged between the Procefi‘es of Diaphragm ) Comprelfed when the Midtiff 1s moved and brought toward 3 Plain, whereupon the Milky humor is Impelled farther and farther upward through the Thoracick Ducts, till it landeth in the Subclavran Vein. This afcent of the Chyle is much aflifted by the Mechanilm of the Dnéis as furnilhed with Valves, which give way to the afcent of the Chyle upward, toward the Subclavian Vein, and give a check to its retrograde mo. tion toward the common Receptacle. This Learned Author doth farther Illuflrate the motion of the Chyle blend- Another E:- ed with Lymplm in the Thoracick Duets by another Ingenious Experiment, by p rimrntpmring thema‘ making an Apertion in the left fide between the third and fourth upper Ribs, in which region the Chylifetous VeiTeIs do commonly meet in one Trunk, which leaneth over againfi‘ the Gulet upon one of the Mufcles, and pafleth tion of the Chyle. under the 'Plenra toward the Subclavian Vein 3 Sothat a Finger being inimit- ted through an Orifice of the wound, did Lacerate the tender wall of the Buff whereuponthe Chyle was Exonerated into the cavity of the Thorax, and could by no means infinuate it felf into the Subclavian Vein : The wound being fowed up, and the Dog though well, fed for fame days, grew faint and died 5 and afterward the Thorax being opened, was found full of Chyle. And to give a farther Demonfiration of the progrefs of the Milky juice through the proper Velfels of the Thorax, an Injeétion was made below into the Thoracick Duet, and the Liquor was found to difcharge it felf through the wounded Ducts, and was whollylodged in the cavity of the Thorax, as not being capable to make its way into the Subclavian Vein. And a wound being made in the left tide of the Thorax between the third and fourth upper Ribs, and a firong Compreflion made of the Thoracick Duct for an hour or more, the Chyle cannotinfinuate it felf through the Terminations of the Chyliferous Veflels into the Subclavian Vein, whereupon Arteries, inferted into the Glands of the Liver, Spleen, and other parts of the lower Apaitiment; So that the Lymp/m is Impelled in the Lymphat- the paffage of the Milky humor being intercepted above, is forced to make a retrograde current downward into the common Receptacle and Laéteal dufts by the motion of the Inteltines and Abdominal Mufcles through the Mefentery into the common Receptacle, where it meetcth with the Chyle and diluteth it, and being, in aliociation with it, doth allilt its motion through the Thoracick Ducts, as having a more conflant and brisk afcent in greater proportion than that of the Chyle.
