Now having Treated of the Ana/iomafer of the veflels of the fame Tribe and Family, Arteries with Arteries, and Veins with Veins, I intend now to dilL‘ourle the inofculations of the Vellels of feveral Tribes, how they anti their offspring efpoufe each other; how Arteries make a near union and converfe with Veins, and inofculare with each other in the Dum and Pie Mt- nynx. And of this Opinion are diverfc Learned Anatomifts, as DnWillir, Dr. Higlmzore, and others of great note; but upon a diligent and curious .featch, it \‘\'ill clearly appear to a dilinterefled perfon, not prepofl'eflied erll prejudices ', That although it may be ealily granted, the Carodite Arteries The mm" are often in conjunction with the Jugular Veins, both in the 'Membranes (lo not inn‘c'xlarcn ith thtjugular Veins. and fubftance of the Brain, yet this union of the Arteries and Veins Will not amount to an Inofculari n, but only to an All‘ociation, and the tcafon why di\erfe Antient and Modern Anatomil'cs have been drawn into this Belief, that the Vech-ls in their feveral Divarications, fometimes pafling OVCl' one another, fometimes accofting each other, are fo firmly united CfPOUL ed, that the Arteries and Veins will not fuffizr a Divorce, unlefsaand great violence be offered to them, and then hardly quit each orher, without a lace- ration of their Coats. But to put a period to this controve and begging the pardon of thofe Learned Men; I humbly conceive thisrfy, {trio} affociatiofl of the Arteries with Veins in the Cmfla and ‘Pia Mater, to be no true inorculation, becaule there cannot be found by the ufe of any Infirument, 35 Probe, or Briilel, or the like, any perforation interceding the Arteries an Veins, whereby they can hold any intimate correfpo ndence, whereby the Purple {treams may be communicated to each other, which is neceffiry' according to Worthy Dr. Hngzzwre 's Opinion, who alfertcrh in many ‘placesff is 0f the Pia Mater. his Anatomy of the Brain; That the circulation of the Blood is performed both in the Membranes and the Brain it felf, by many Amflomfet of Ar: tcries with Veins : But this Opinion needeth no farther dilpute, When it plainly contradiéteth Antopfy 5 for in Senfe, as yet it cannot be found, that there are any common pallages which intercede the Arteries and Veins, to convey the confiant current of Blood from one to the other, without being tranfmitted from the extremities of the Capillary Arteries , through the Membranes to the Capillary Veins. But it may be eafily proved experimentally , That there are many [nofl culations with Veffels of the fame kind, either Arterie s with Arteries, or Veins with Veins, each of them hold an intimate commer ce with other, by one common Chanel, by which the united Arteries and Branches, have frequent Perforations running one into another, and accordingly tranfmitteth vital Liquor, f0 that if by any extraordinary acciden t, the conflant entercourfe of Blood ihould be intercepted in One, Two, or more great Branchesof Arteries, it may readily be fupplied by the Inofcul ation of fubfequent Arteries, which may be experimentally proved, with no lefs wonder, then delight, by the repeated injeétions of White Wax, mixed with Cinnaba r, and other Liquors, into any one of the Trunks of the Carotie Interna, in either Me of the Brain; and forthwith the Branches of the Carotidesl in both fides, as well as the prime vertebral Arteries, {hall participate of the Wax and Liquors. A Perfon of Eminence and Worth being dead, and his Body Dilieet his Mcfcntery was dilcovered to be highly Ulcerous, and his Skull ed, being taken off, and his Brain infpeéted, one fide feemed as it were to be putre~ lied, and Cavities of the Vefléls almofi wholly (but up, and the comfe of Blood in that Hde totally intercepted; ['0 that it feemed very firange he did not labour undera Delirium, or Privation of his Intellectual, or fcnfitive Funétions, being not aliliéted with any Soporous Indifpofition. But on the contrary, when he was lick, he was very clear in the exercile of his Reafon and Senfe, to the time of his Diffolution , which Was occalioned by corrupt Blood, wholly {topped in one fide, and the fiream more [trougly carried on into the Vertebral and Carotide Arteries of the other fide, which were doubly enlarged by the great Rivulets of Blood impetuoufly flowing into them. |
