" ‘ Dear Dr. Widtsoe: I am enclosing herewith a communication from the Executive Committee of the U-Letter men, which is self-explanatory. It might be well to state that the U-Club was organized last October and has a membership of about 450 former athletes=t of the University of Utah, all of whom have won their letter ' U in athletic contests for the University of Utah. The aim of this organization is to assist in every way possible in the upbuilding of the University and especially function in athletic lines. We have no desire to work independently but are anxious to cooperate with the execu- tive organizations of the University to the fullest extent. However, we do believe that by the adoption of the outline herewith presented the entire athletic situation at the University could be put on a self-paying basis. Assuring you that we are behind the University to help and give all the support possible for the good of the Institution, I am Yours very truly," Thomas varley, Secretary. ' . - We, the undersigned, as members of the Executive Committee of the U-Letter Men respectfully submit for your consideration the following suggestions respecting the management of competitive athletics at the University. 1. That all competitive athletics be under the general supervision and control of a board consisting of five members, viz., head of physical education department as chairman, a representative of BOard of Regents, a representa. tive of alumni, a representative of student body, a represen- 5 tative of U-Letter Men. » a "' 2. That this board of control function within the ' department of physical education and through that department in accordance with University departmental and school organization. 5. That the board of control appoint a graduate manager who will, usbject to general supervision on the part of the board, manage all competitive athletics. 4. That the graduate manager shall nominate with the consent and approval of the board of control the coach or coaches for the various competitive athletics. |
