Show 157. UNIVERSITY OF UTAH DEPARTMENT OF METALLURGICAL RESEARCH February 1, 1921, Pres. John A. Widtsoe, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah. Subject: Patent on Copper Ore Treatment by Dr.Robert H. Bradford. Dear President Widtsoe: You are probably aware of the facts and details of the above mentioned subject. However, I beg to briefly state them from my own point of view and give you my recommendations, regiarding the disposition of the case, which have been reached by Dr. Bradford, Mr. D. A. Lyon, Supervisor of our Experiment Stations and myself. Early in 1918 Dr. Bradford was employed by the Pope Shenon Mining Company, which company owns a copper mine in Idaho. This company engaged Dr. Bradford to find ways and means of treating their ores. Later Dr. Bradford was employed by the Metallurgical Research Department and the greater part of his time while serving in this capacity was devoted to the Pope Shenon ores. In the fall of 1918 Dr. Bradford applied for a patent as a result of some discoveries he had made in his research work and financial aid was given by the Pope Shenon Mining Company in securing his patent which it required over two years to obtain. The company, on the basis of Dr. Bradford's investigative work, began the construction of a volatilization plant on their property near Salmon, Idaho. The disposition of the title of the patent has been in question for some time, the ownership lying between Dr. Bradford, the Pope Shenon Mining Company and the University of Utah. Dr. Merrill asked me to take up the matter of this patent and make such recommendations as seemed best toward the disposition of the same and as stated above, at a meet- ing of the Board of Directors of the Pope Shenon Mining Co., Dr. Bradford, Mr. Lyon and myself, we decided to make the following recommendations for your consideration and recommendation to the Board of Regents: 1. That the patent, which is in Dr. Bradford's name, be assigned to the University of Utah with the understanding, of course, that any revenue which might come from the use . of this patent would revert to the Department of Metallurgical Research or the School of Mines. 2. That all royalties collected for the use of the patent in the State of Utah are reverted to the University of Utah, except that the Pope Shenon Mining Company shall be allowed to use the said patent in this state without royalty. |
