Show REGULAR MONTHLY MEETING OF THE BOARD OF REGENTS JANUARY 10. 1921. 2:00 P. M. ‘Held in the Regents' Room, University of Utah. - Present: Chairman Riter; Regents Van Cott, Fitch, Love, Christensen, Alexander, Stewart, and President Widtsoe. The following communication from George D. Keyser, representative of the Salt Lake City Committee on Smoke Abatement, was read: January 8, 1921. "Hon. W. W. Riter, Chairman, Board of Regents, University of Utah, Salt Lake City,Utah. Dear Mr. Riter: "The success of the campaign to rid Salt Lake City of its winter smoke nuisance depends upon the continued and complete co-operation of all the citizens and the heating plants of the city. The University of Utah, because of its elevated location and because it is a public institution, has unfortunately become a serious hindrance to the success Of our efforts. At almost any hour, day or night, a dense cloud of smoke can be seen rising from the heating plant at the University. "The advisory committee on smoke abatement and the inspector of the city smoke abatement department have been in almost constant touch with those responsible for the operation of this plant and have been convinced that every- thing possible in the way of efficient operation is being done to keep-the smoke at the minimum. A thorough and careful examin ation has developed the facts that the plant is carrying an overload of 100% and that the present unit is improperly constructed to secure even approximate smokeless operation. "Since this plant was constructed, building after building has been added at the university with no corres- ponding increase in the heating plant, with the result that the plant now is required to furnish more than double the radiation for which it was originally constructed. This overcrowding not only makes efficient firing almost impossible but is the cause of a serious loss in that from 10% to 15% of the heating units of the coal consumed is discharged into the air in the form of offensive smoke. |
