Show / - 105,000 a.f. are developed within the Bonneville Basin by the diking of Provo and Goshen Bays on Utah Lake. * * * - About another'45,000 a.f. are developed in both Basins by collection of return flows, firming up local sources, etc-. Uses .- 99,000 a.f. is for M&I use in the Bonneville Basin. X - 112,000 a.f. supplies supplemental irrigation for 213,000 acres of previously irrigated lands, mostly in the Bonneville Basin. - 95,000 a.f. supplies 30,000 acres of previously nonirrigated land, mostly in the Bonneville Basin. Enough water is developed in the Bonneville Basin by diking Utah Lake, and exchanging the salvaged water with that collected in the Provo River in the Jordanelle Reservoir, to supply the total M&I output of the Unit. In fact, . the combination of Utah Lake and Jordanelle Reservoir is called the Municipal j and Industrial Water System of the Bonneville Unit. Issues . • • Alternative M&I Supplies to Salt Lake County, Our analysis indicates that as much as 100,000 a.f. can be developed for Salt Lake County from groundwater, Wasatch streams, and the gradual conversion of irrigated land to urban use: That amount could meet the projected demand until 1995 using Bureau of Reclamation's demand projections., Another 100,000 a.f. could be developed from the diking of Utah Lake and construction of the Jordanelle Reservoir. However, the Utah Lake dike on Provo Bay appears to have severe environmental problems. : * EPAis very concerned about the effects of the Provo Bay dike on Utah Lake water quality. Some modifications may be required in the planned Goshen Bay dike to preserve spawning areas. In our opinion, we can reasonablv_anjLiclpai;e salvagmcL^hQut 6Q.QQQ a . f . from Utah _Lake._ Despite this possible reduction in Bonneville Unit output, we_can s t i l l identify enougjiJnoji^ajjtyJBnni^ - water to last until 2005^ ~ V ~ - : We believe M&I water should be developed gradually, as needed; we disagree strongly with the implications of the Bureau of Reclamation statements in the EIS that since a l l sources of supply must be used by^Og^or^o^the order of development is unimportant. By using" « f the most economical _and environmentally acceptabTe~alternatives f i r s t, our options remairTopen. 7 -:-1---^ '-* :- - ' ! - IT"** |
