Show brought back for local use. And on 20 October 1890, the first railroad train reached Mt. Pleasant on a D&RG branch line running south via Thistle through the entire county of Sanpete to Sevier County. Its coming brought even greater advances in commerce for the area, and the railroad was later extended as far south as Marysvale, Piute County. John K told of working at laying railroad track through the Indianola area. He wore new boots, and realized too late that his feet were swelling. He managed to pull off the boots and was forced to walk for some miles without them on his homeward trek. New stores opened in Mt. Pleasant, and new mills and lumber companies; harness shops and saddleries were established, irrigation companies were formed and incorporated; churches improved and new ones built; livestock companies organized. A newspaper (the Mt. Pleasant Pyramid) was established in 1890, and a City Park of twenty acres was purchased by the city for $504.00. It had been the custom for people to carry coal-oil lanterns at night to light their way in the dark. Then, in December of 1889? the city council voted to place five street lights (coal-oil lamps) on the main street corners. In 1893 the Mt. Pleasant Electric Company filed articles of incorporation, and in 1894 the old coal-oil street lights were replaced with new electric lights. 74 |
