I imagine the channel of the river changed and gave us better water on the east side than we had going down. Q Don't you mean that you changed your course, not that the river changed its course? A We changed our course; I think we changed our course because we thought the river had changed its course, that is, there was a better channel on the east side at that point than on the west side. Q Take this illustration you speak of, you say coming down at that place you touched a bar, and when you went back up you went up on the other side of the river to avoid that bar? A To avoid it. Q How do you know there was any change in the channel at that point? A I don't know, except from the condition of the surface water; apparently it was; I made no soundings. Q You didn't go over to the place you came down at, at all, did you, going up? A No, but we could see it over there; we avoided it because |
