Show 4614 Weber- D 2628 Q In connection with the operation of the work in and about Hanson creek, did you use a barge? A We called them scows. They had a scow there, about a seven- foot bottom, and I don't know, -- twenty of twenty- two feet long; they used that to get the stuff across from the land over to the bar, across the river. Q How was that barge operated? A It had two oars; it took one man to each oar to manipulate the thing; the there was a third party on the stern end; he was steering it along, to hold a section, or whatever you call it, right side up with the stream; the we just kept pulling; we had to go around an island. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q Which side of the river is Good Hope bar on? A On the right- hand side as the river flows. THE SPECIAL MASTER: I thought he said he took supplies from the land across the river to the bar? THE WITNESS: This is another bar, California bar is on the left- hand side of the river as the river flows. THE SPECIAL MASTER: Where is the California bar? BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q It is right at the mouth of Hanson creek, isn't it? A It is a trifle above, -- half a mile or so. MR. BLACKMAR: That is mile 130. THE WITNESS: I would call it about thirty- six miles |
