Show Inside Out, 154 "Is it a girl friend or a boy friend?" "A girl friend." "And you've already checked the bus lines?" "Yep." "I'd be happy to drive you, and that would be much safer than the bus at night." "The bus is safe, Dad. And besides, I'm meeting her on the bus. She's just a few blocks down." "Can I drive you to the bus stop?" "OK." In the car, Dad said, "I need to talk to you about Leslie." My heart sunk. "She didn't tell me what you said to her yesterday. She wasn't going to mention it at all, actually, but I just happened to catch her crying, and I finally dragged it out of her that you had had a-discussion." I looked out the window. We were already pulling up to the bus stop. "Look, Andli, I know it's hard to have a step-mother. She's not Mom. But she's not trying to be. She's a human being, Andli, and she deserves some kindness. You may not know this, but she's had a hard life." "Like what?" I asked. My voice sounded resentful. I didn't really mean it to be. I just felt trapped, stuck in the car when the bus could be coming along any second. "Well, for one thing, did you know she was married before?" I looked at him. "No!" "It was only for a year. Turns out the guy was abusive." |
