Show Inside Out, 212 The hairy kid slunk down some stairs into a basement rec room. On the stairway I passed a picture on the wall, a family portrait that showed a mom and dad and five grinning kids. By their clothes I could see that the picture was ten or fifteen years old. There were words stenciled on the frame, "Families are Forever." Turning a corner at the bottom of the stairs I had to stop for a moment because the room was dark except for some candles on a counter in the kitchenette at the back of the room. The music obviously came from this room and it was pounding. People were lounging around couches, talking and smoking. I recognized the smell of pot that reminded me of how Sophie had used to smell when she came home. Some of them were drinking beer from bottles and cans. I couldn't help wondering why Terra hung around with these people if she was Mormon. Mormons weren't supposed to drink. "Hey, who's that?" someone called. I froze. "I'm looking for Terra," I said. "Is she here?" A guy stood up from a couch and I recognized Simon Guthrie from school. He made his way over to me, peering through the dark. "Hey, you're the new girl, right?" He grinned. "Welcome to the party!" He turned, "Hey, Russel, you didn't tell me you invited this new girl." Russel, apparently busy with a girl on the other couch, mumbled something. Simon turned back to me. "Do you wanna beer?" he asked. "No, I-I mean, no thanks. Maybe later." I smiled, nervously. "I'm just looking for Terra. I've got to talk to her." |
