Show Inside Out, 54 "Yeah?" he answered from out front. "I'm leaving." "OK," he said. "Drive safe." Terra grabbed her coat and purse, wishing she had brought her bigger, woven bag. The kitten would fit easily in there. On her way out to her car, she went back to the dumpster and pulled out a cardboard box. She knelt and formed a nest with her coat, then tucked the kitten into the center of it. She opened her car door and wedged the box behind the driver's seat and drove home. At home, Mom took one look. "What in the world?" "He was freezing, Mom. Behind the dumpster. I couldn't find the Mama anywhere." Mom sighed heavily. "I'm working extra hours, Terra. Don't you think I've got enough to take care of?" "I'll-" "Yes, I know. You'll do everything." Mom turned her head to the window, but it was too dark to see anything out there. "Look," she said. "I don't really care. But I don't have any extra money. Can you afford to buy all the stuff with your paycheck?" "Yeah, I'm sure it's not that much." "And you'll have to get it fixed and get its shots, because it's not fair to get a pet and then not take care of it. That's not cheap." "I'll figure it out, Mom." Mom sighed again. "OK. Just take care of it." Dad didn't notice. |
