Show Inside Out, 100 Chapter 22: Terra Terra reached over and turned on her bedside lamp. 3:26 a.m. The pitiful whining just outside her window sounded almost like a newborn baby crying, but she knew that it was Atticus. She got up and opened her door silently. She crept down the hallway, passing her parents' bedroom, where the door was closed. She hoped they were still sleeping. If this cat kept them up at night, they would tell her to get rid of it. She felt her way through the living room and into the kitchen. The snow outside held the light from the streetlights so that the windows glowed. In the kitchen, the back door squeaked as she opened it. "Atticus!" she whispered in a shout. The crying continued. "Here, kittykittykitty! Atticus!" She finally had to run to the side of the house in her bare feet to scoop up the kitten. She could tell as she held him shivering against her on her way back inside that he was hurt. What should she do? Finally she decided to turn on the kitchen light and take a look. The light flooded into the living room and onto the form of her father sleeping on the couch. Although this was the first time she had seen it, she didn't feel surprised to see him there. She only wondered how long he had been sleeping there. Since the accident? Before that? She looked at the kitten. He had been in a fight. His ear was pretty messed up and he had another bite on his flank. He didn't want her to touch any of it. She couldn't tell how bad it was, but it looked like he might need stitches on his ear. She didn't have money for a vet. |
