Show Inside Out, 196 "Well, don't you think there could be another reason why she won?" "What do you mean?" "What's her full name again?" he asked, stopping just at the doorway. "Terra Morales Gates," I said, slowly. "Oh. Like she won because she is Mexican?" I asked. j Denver just wiggled his eyebrows at me, then turned and headed down the hall. I turned the other way-and saw Terra, standing just outside of the classroom, frozen still. She was staring at me and I knew from the second I saw her that she had heard everything. Everything. Including what I had said about her friends. Including my last sentence implying that she had won because of her race, not the quality of her work I saw the shock and the betrayal flash across her face, and then saw her purposefully arrange her face into cold nothingness. She turned and walked away. I knew she wouldn't be at the dance room after school. It took me a second, but my mind finally jumped into gear. She was my friend. I couldn't let this happen! I ran to catch up to Terra. "Terra! Terra! Tm sorry. I didn't mean you weren't good. I was just-" "I know what you meant," she said, walking quickly. Not looking at me. "I'm sorry, Terra. I was being stupid. He does that to me. My brain turns off-" "Obviously," she said. "Terra, what did you want to talk to me about? I want to hear about it." "Leave me alone," she said, turning the corner. |
