Show Inside Out, 30 The SUV got stuck in the sand on the beach and we had to spend an hour digging it out. I remember how happy and relaxed Mom was, even though the car was stuck. It was as if having to work to free the car from the sand just added a sense of adventure to the whole trip. I remember the light, the way it seemed whiter like it always does in the fall. I sat for a long time there on the beach with my eyes closed, letting the sun warm my eye/ids. I remember that Mom was humming, and then Oad joined in, humming harmony with her. They had met in a choir in college, and I guess it was one of their old choir songs. We went to church together on Sunday. The church was really crowded with all of the lake visitors. That afternoon it rained, so we sat in the tent-trailer with the lantern on and played pinochle. Mom made popcorn and hot chocolate on the camp stove. Then at night we snuggled in our sleeping bags and listened to the rain on the roof of the camper. I thought nothing could ever go wrong. |
