Show Inside Out, 219 "Oh, you haven't talked yet?" asked Dad. And then, before I could answer, he said, "That's fine, that's fine. Don't worry. I've got it figured out. The Dairy Keen is open late, right?" I turned to Terra and she nodded. "And you know the guy working there, right?" he asked Terra. She nodded again. "So how about this. How "bout I drop you girls off there and run home to check on the guests. Then I'll come back to get you in an hour or so and escort the two of you home. Would that work for you?" I stared at him, amazed at his thoughtfiilness. I hadn't known he could be so cool! I turned to Terra. She was watching me. I asked her, "Would that be O.K.?" "I guess so," she said. She didn't seem to be so angry anymore-hadn't seemed all that mad since we left the house, actually. I was glad. As we rode to the Dairy Keen, I realized that I really didn't have all that much to say to her, besides apologizing. I had been so frantic to get her away from the party and whatever mysterious menace might be there that I hadn't thought much past that. But it was a great relief to be with her, safe in Dad's car and away from the party. At the Dairy Keen, Dad stuffed a ten-dollar bill in my hand before driving away, saying "Get yourselves a treat." While we waited for our food, I did a lot more apologizing. Terra, probably too tired to keep being mad, finally said she would forgive me. Well, what she said was, "Give it up, Andli. Tm here, aren't I?" I figured that was good enough for now. I was determined to make it up to her, though. |
