Show Inside Out, 93 Chapter 21: Andli Terra was not in my history class, but two of her friends were: Simon Guthrie and Russel Anderson. They were leaning back in their chairs with their feet stretched out in front of them like they were lying in hammocks somewhere, shooting the breeze. I paid attention. Maybe I would hear something that could help me make contact with Terra somehow. They were talking about a party, and Russel told Simon that he was sure Terra was going to be there. It seemed pretty clear that Simon really liked Terra. Now, I knew that Simon was a jerk. But maybe Terra really liked Simon. Maybe she was like me with Denver, hoping desperately that Simon knew she was alive. Probably she would want to know that a guy liked her, right? It seemed like an easy way to start a positive conversation with her. So I caught up with her in the hall later, right before we got to English. I tried to be really casual. Like maybe if I acted cool enough, it wouldn't be so glaringly obvious that I was talking to her without any right to, completely out of the blue. "Hey, Terra," I said. She turned and sort of wrinkled her nose. "What?" We were already almost to the door. Denver was in front of us. I didn't want him to hear me talking to Terra. I lowered my voice, but still tried to make it sound really cheerful and casual. "I just heard someone talking about you." "So?" she asked. Obviously this wasn't going to be easy, and now I was in it and there was no way out but to plow through. |
