Show Inside Out, 171 "He's a Mormon?" I asked. "Yeah. Most people around here are, you know." "I knew that. I just don't really think of it, you know, in particular. About particular people." "Well, even though almost everyone is, you can't really tell anything about a person by knowing that they are Mormon. There are all different kinds of Mormons." "I guess that makes sense," I said. "So are your parents Mormon too?" Terra said, "More or less, I guess. My mom . . . I can't tell any more what she believes." "You mean she's not preachy like most moms are supposed to be?" I asked. She grimaced. "Sometimes too preachy," she said. "At least she was to my dad. These days she doesn't preach much to me. Sometimes I'm not even sure she knows I'm alive." "At least you have a mom," I said. Terra was quiet for a few minutes. I had already told her my mom was dead. I wondered if my last remark had offended her, but I didn't really know how to fix it. I wanted to get back on the subject of Denver. And kind of I didn't. It surprised me to realize that I was scared about what she might say. Why? "So . . . Denver is a Mormon," I said. "You know he cheated, don't you?" she said. Was she talking about the book report? My heart somersaulted but I acted calm. How could she know about the book report? "On what?" I finally asked. |
