Show Inside Out, 159 Chapter 32: Terra When Terra got home from the community center, the house smelled wonderful. Mom had come home from work and made arroz con leche. It was cooling on the stove, but neither Mom nor Dad was there. Terra looked through the house and found her mother asleep on her bed. The hall light on her eyelids made her wake up. "James? Oh, Terra," she said, as if from far away. "Oh, sorry, Mom, go back to sleep," Terra said, backing out of the room. "No, Terra-come in," Mom said, sitting up. Terra came slowly back into the room. Mom rubbed her eyes. "I was just so tired. I thought I'd lie down for just a minute, but... How was your class?" "Fine." "Who was it you went with again? Not Katy." No, not Katy. I know you wish it were. "Her name is Andli. Just a girl from school." "Oh. Well, I'd like to meet her. Why don't you bring her over?" "Mom, where's Dad?" "Oh-" Mom looked around, not so much as if she were looking for Dad, but more like she was looking for what to say. "I suppose he had to work late." "Did he call?" "Um, he may have. I was so sleepy. Maybe he called and I just forgot." Terra felt like she had swallowed a bowling ball. She wanted to talk to Mom, really talk. But she couldn't. |
