Show Inside Out, 83 Mom and I were sitting at the table eating cereal. She looked horrible, like she always did back then. She had quit wearing makeup. The roots had grown out in her hair. I knew she hadn 't slept because she had come in at 2:00 a.m. and wakened me to ask again if I had any idea where Joe was. I had told her that he was probably with his creepy friends behind some 7-11 or something. The door banged as Joe came in. He didn't even care enough to try sneaking in, I guess. He came into the kitchen actually whistling, and got a bowl out. Mom didn't say anything. "Hi, guy si" he said, all cheerful. He had dark circles under his eyes. We didn't answer him. "Well, you guys sure are sunshiny today," he said. He sat down and poured corn flakes into his bowl. "Joseph," said Mom, quietly. "What?" he said. He smiled at her, but his eyes weren't looking directly at her. "Joseph, I know that we have no way of keeping you from going out at night." |
