Show Inside Out, 194 Chapter 39: Andli I went to the Media Center at lunch to talk to the librarian about how to do research on my mother for my English paper. When I got to English, Terra smiled a small smile at me, but she didn't look happy. I had thought our talk had gone well last night. What was wrong now? Denver flashed me a glowing smile and my insides melted. I hadn't decided what to think about him. I only knew that I wanted to sit very, very close to him. Mrs. Ottley spent the class talking about documenting sources, but I couldn't concentrate. Denver smelled so good and I swear I could feel his body heat like a sweet warmth coming back to my seat. Just before the bell rang, Mrs. Ottley changed the subject. "I have some exciting news," she said. Everyone sat up straight to listen. "Last night I received an announcement. Remember the Young Writer's Academy?" My stomach got heavy. "Well, I need to say a big congratulations to our own Terra Morales Gates, who will be representing our school at the Academy this summer! Congratulations, Terra!" Denver turned and looked at me. A few of the kids clapped a little, but it was a pitiful sound and it trickled away quickly. Then the bell rang. Denver stood and turned to talk to me, but Terra reached over and touched my arm. "I've got to talk to you," she said. "Can we talk after school?" "Yeah," I said. "Til meet you by the dance room, OK?" |
