Show Inside Out, 123 Chapter 26: Terra Dad was gone before Terra came to the kitchen for breakfast. Mom was rushing around gathering stuff so that she could leave soon, too. "Did you hear us up in the night?" Terra asked. "No. Who?" "Dad and me." Mom stopped and turned to Terra. "What were you doing?" "Atticus got in a fight. We were cleaning his wounds." "Oh, psssshssh," Mom said, making a noise as if to say, "You got me all wound up for a stupid cat?" "Don't worry," Terra said sarcastically. "I think he's going to survive." Mom stopped again. "Look, Terra, it's not that I-" "I know. It's not that you hate Atticus. Just that you don't have time to worry about him." "Yes. That's it exactly." But do you have time to worry about me? "There's-there's something else I want to talk to you about." Mom had assembled her lunch and purse on the counter and was just scooping them up to head to the bus stop. It flashed through Terra's mind that she should be more grateful to Mom for taking the bus every day so that Terra could keep the car for school and work. "Yes? What is it?" Mom asked, frozen with her arms already reaching around her bags, but not picking them up yet. |
