Show Inside Out, 85 Chapter 19: Andli In English it was my turn to share my poem. I shared the one about Mom that I had written last week. Denver smiled at me afterwards, and I think Terra rolled her eyes, but probably not any more than usual. Denver was wearing his leather jacket. He had worn that jacket on the first day of school and so until I learned his name I had referred to him in my mind as "leather jacket guy." His cologne combined with the smell of the leather to make the most amazing scent, and I sat there inhaling, in heaven. Then Mrs. O said he was next to share his poem. He went up to the front of the room and read: / know you loved the fireworks. I watched you from the first felt your heart beat at each burst, saw your face flash bright and sharp in every glare. But now that they are over, your ears are dull so you cannot hear the wind and your flashing eyes are blind but they 11 adjust and then you '11 see that I'm still here. Still here, still here, and you '11 hear my quiet song because the stars and I have been here all along. And right as he finished the last word, he looked up, right at me. And that look felt like he reached right down through my eyes into some deep part of me and plucked, so that all of me twanged. I didn't notice if Terra rolled her eyes. But she must have, because Mrs. Ottley said, 'Terra, we treat everyone's writing with respect. You know that. I think it was a very good poem." After class, I touched Denver's back. It felt electric. |
