So:; X. 8 Sf The University of Utah's Middle East Center Outreach Program, the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, and the Utah State Office of Education, with financial support from the Utah Humanities Council, are proud to sponsor a workshop that will focus on the deep historical and cultural connections between the Middle East and Western culture. Teachers, high school and middle school students (with or without their parents), and anyone else interested in learning more about the Middle East is invited to attend. Explore the ways in which western civilization has been enriched by contact with Middle Eastern cultures. Middle Eastern contributions to medicine, astronomy, mathematics, geography, language, art, and architecture formed much of the basis of human knowledge at the end of the Fifteenth Century. Teachers, students, and. parents will marvel at how many of the things we take for granted as coming to us through the Renaissance in Europe had their origins in the Middle East many years earlier. Inservice credit (0.5 semester hour) is available through USOE and Jordan District. A Middle Eastern luncheon buffet ($6.00) and a beautifully designed t-shirt ($10.00) will be available. The Friday evening session, "The Middle East in World Politics," will critically examine the cultural and historical forces influencing the Middle East today. This session is geared to an adult audience--high school students .will find it fascinating. A Middle Eastern hands-on art project will be available at 5:00 p.m. for those interested. The Saturday sessions, for students, teachers, and interested adults, will look at the Middle East through its people, music, language, art, architecture, and archaeology and the surprising ways Middle Eastern culture is woven into the fabric of western culture. Participants can choose from small group sessions that incorporate hands-on learning and innovative teaching strategies. Packets containing useful . information will be provided.
