Show ( DOCENT WORKSHOP Team meetings were held on September 22, 23 and on September 29, 30 from 10:00 a.m. to 3 :OOp.m. Sack lunches were provided for the docents at each session. The classes were devoted to the Fall PARTners program, the theme of which was the Elements of Art. Rebecca Pickett, Assistant Curator of Education, Virginia Catherall, Associate Curator of Education and Bernadette Brown, Curator of Education conducted the training. DOCENT SEMINAR The annual Docent Seminar sessions were held January 6, 13, 20 and 27, 2000. Educational theories that underlie good teaching practices were explored, along with practical ideas on how to use these theories. The classes ran from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. each day. Bernadette Brown presented "What is Discipline-based Art Education and How Can it Make Me a Better DocentT' Virginia Catherall discussed "Constructivist Theory and How it Can Help Me with Teaching in the Museum.'' Rebecca Pickett reviewed the PARTners program - "Revving Up for the New Tenn." And David Carroll, Collection Manager, explained policies related to "Safety Issues in the Museum." EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS (· DCE ART CLASSES: The theme for the annual summer art workshop for children, held August 2 to 6 was "An Asian Art Trek." Thirteen children between the ages of 7 and 12 were enrolled. Some of the projects were to design a Tibetan mandala, create a folding screen or paint an Asian-inspired art work using sumi-e ink. Gay Lyn Sylvies was Bernadette Brown's co-teacher and docents Karin Brown, Yoko Kamaya, Jean Nuismer, Nancy Swanson and MaryKate Wynkoop assisted. Anne Dolowitz, Jan Miller and Gay Lyn Silvies helped plan the activities. IMAGES AND WORDS: This literature and arts program for high schools included 1,220 students from eight schools. In-class docents were: Elizabeth Drinkaus, Marjorie Powis, Cherry Wong, Kathie Zumbro, Madalyn Seaman, Anne Dolowitz, Marge Wilson, Pam Parrot, Jean Nuissmer, Carol Patton and Gay Lyn Sylvies. Following the in-class presentation, students visited the Museum where thervvere inspired to create a literary work based on the art they saw. The works were published in a booklet, displayed at the Museum and also published on the Museum's website. JEWELRY AND SMALL METALS EXHTRIT: Students jewelry and small metals artwork from high schools all over the state. The exhibit, which ran from March 29 to April 6, 2000, opened with a reception on March 29th. Virginia Catherall supervised the program. |
