The Utah Museum of Fine Arts University of Utah November 1999 I am sure that I express the gratitude of all the docents to Helene Fairchild for her comprehensive and interesting tour of the Cathedral. If you missed it, tours are given on a regular basis. I am sure that if you call Helene she would be happy to let you know when the next one is scheduled. DOCENT MEETING Our speaker for our November 11 meeting will be David Sucec, artist and teacher, who will give ~.a slide presentation about Gilgal Garden. Gilgal is a major sculpture garden constructed between 1945-1963 ,_containing original sculptures and engraved stones and boulders. The slide presentation will address the aesthetic, spiritual. philosophical, social and historical images and ideas of Gilgal Garden. After the lecture we can carpool down and see the Garden "in person." This month our meeting time goes back to its usual 1:00 p.m. time slot. ., > l!L STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING November Steering Committee Meeting will be at 9:30 a.m. on November 3rd. I am learning so much from you and from the students. Even though the focus of the tour is landscapes, please feel free to make comparisons to portraits, stili lifes or what ever else you see. · I want to share the following quote with all of you which comes from the Denver Art Museum's exhibit on PLACES (an exhibit of Landscapes) "Many landscape artists rely on our imaginations to pick up on the sensual elements of their works-- the sounds of the leaves rustling, the feel of an ocean breeze, the warm sun on bare skin. Landscape artists even have the power to shape our notions of beauty: How many of us have marveled at a place that reminded us of a great work of art?" Is it possible that 4th graders will now look at the Great Salt Lake or the Wasatch Mountains and say, "This reminds me of a painting I saw at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts." Just a thought.
