Show ( Native American Winter Solstice, Eidul Fitri (Muslim), Chanukah (Jewish), Las Posadas (Latino}, and the Japanese New Year. The Docent Exhibition Committee was: Anne Dolowitz, Co-chair; Pam Parrot, Co-chair; Virginia Kalantzes, Kathryn Miller, Jean Moseley, Elodie Payne, Arita Sparks, Ann Stewart and Doug Waters. DOCENT ART EXHIBIT: For the first time, UMFA presented an exhibit featuring art works created by its docents. The exhibit was opened on June 6, 1999 with a reception and ran through June 27th. Included in the show were watercolors, oils, pencil drawings, pottery, bronze sculpture, textile works and original music. GALLERY TALKS: Docents volunteered to give short gallery talks on various Sunday afternoons, starting December, 1998. Subjects were diverse and generally focused on items from the Museum's permanent collection. SPECIAL ACTIVITIES AND TRIPS DOCENT RECRUITMENT BARBECUE: The Docent Recruitment Barbecue was held September 24, 1998 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. A short "behind the scenes" tour was given by Bernadette Brown. She discussed how the Museum collection began. Docents helping with the barbecue were Alice Cozakos, Helene Fairchild, Virginia Kalantzes, Pam Parrot, Ruth Kerr, Pam Weilenmann and Marge Wilson. VISIT TO SALT LAKE ART CENTER: The Docent Meeting on November 12, 1998 was held at the Salt Lake Art Center. Will South, one of the curators of the current exhibition, provided insights into the symbolic, emotional and purely formal nature of all colors by focusing on one color - BLUE. CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON AND TOUR: Docents met at the Salt Lake Buddhist Temple on December 10, 1998. Reverend Jeremy Hirano gave a lecture on the symbolism in the temple and discussed Buddhism, as practiced in Japan. A luncheon followed at the Mikado Japanese restaurant. LOS ANGELES ART TOUR: Several docents traveled to Los Angeles to see the special Van Gogh exhibit at the Los Angeles Cq.unty Museum. Visits were also made to the new J. Paul Getty Museum, the Gamble House in Pasadena, the Norton Simon Museum and the Armand Hammer Museum of Art. This trip was held March 23-26, 1999. SPRING OUTING: A Gallery Stroll was held on May 21, 1999 to explore the art available in Salt Lake City. Some of the galleries visited were: The King's Cottage Gallery; The Arts of Utah Gallery; the Phillips Gallery and the Southam Gallery. A box lunch was furnished to the participants. |
