Gadsby It was reported by President Olpin that the administration had been approached on the building of an explosives laboratory EXPLOSIVES in the adjacent mountain area east of the campus. The person- LABORATORY nel here is especially outstanding in this field and many of them are receiving attractive offers. A large number of research men from the government and elsewhere are continually consulting with our staff members on this and other research matters. This explosives project has been discussed a great deal, but there have been so many other requests for research projects that are not so hazardous, that a let-up in interest in this pro- ject has resulted. The administration has finally effected an amiable severance with this proposed project unless of course we should find ourselves engaged in all-out war. A brief report was made by President Olpin concerning negotiations with the U. S. Government for construction of a speed flight laboratory on the University campus, to cost in the neighborhood of $1, 000, 000. Dr. Richard N. Thomas of the ESTABLISHMENT OF SPEED FLIGHT LABORATORY Department of Mathematics and others are particularly inter- ested in such a project at the University. The President discussed with the Board a proposal from the Department of State - Technical Cooperation Administration - Washington, D.
