Q Now, when did your second expedition move out? A November 25th. Q From where? A From Denver, November 25th. Q And from what point did you take to the river? A We took the same point, Greenriver Junction, and found the boats and supplies there. Q What character of boats did you have on this second trip, and how many of them? A There were three boats that were made specially for us, at Waukeegan, Illinois, twenty- two feet long, three and a half feet beam, and twenty- two inches deep, quarter- decked all around, built out of oak, with hickory ribs, a life- line around the outside, with then water- tight compartments in the bottom for loading. Q How much water did they draw? A About fifteen inches. Q That is, fifteen inches when loaded? A From fifteen to eighteen inches, loaded. Q About how much of a duffle and supplies, in pounds, did you carry on these boats? |
