Show 3383 Nims- D 1048 We had a darky cook with us, and Richard that was drowned was a darky, too. We stopped at noon for lunch beside a water hole there that the cattle had been using, and while we thought the Colorado was muddy, dirty, this was mud. I tried to strain some through my handkerchief, we was so thirsty, -- but my handkerchief was too dirty to get it clear anyhow, and we had to go without water. BY THE SPECIAL WATER: Q By the way, Mr. Nims, what did you do for water coming down the Green and Colorado river A Drank it out of the river; once in a while we came across a spring. Q Did you strain it, did you put it through cloth, or a handkerchief, anything of that kind? A No, just dip it out of the river and drink it, sand and all; but at night the cook would dip up a bucketful and let it settle, so we would have clear water to make coffee in the morning. THE SPECIAL MASTER: I guess we better not go much further than Kanab; it is a little off the trail. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q From Kanab, then, you went back to Greenriver? A Yes, we got a team at Kanab and provisions, and hired then to drive us to Milford, the end of the railroad at that time. |
