Show 3205 Dent- D 1231 by sounding pole which I carried myself, it became necessary to slow the cost down to about half- speed. If the depth got to be about two feet, the boat dragged very perceptibly. If the depth got to about one and a half feet it was ordinarily necessary for somebody to get out and help steer and push. Mr. Cecil Thompson, the assistant, had a pair of wading boats, and got out form time to time when necessary, to help straighten the boat around, or more to steer it than to actually push it, as the propeller could do more pushing, than the man aboard. We left the landing just below the Moab bridge, and immediately encountered quite a serious bar. That was one of the few occasions on the trip where, having tried one channel, we backed out and tried another approach in order to try to get across to the deep water on the opposite side. In that case we tried both sides of the river, and eventually merely drug our way across the bar. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q About every witness who testified here has testified as to that fact. That would be what you would call a permanent bar, wouldn't it? A So, your Honor; that bar might be in a very good condition after the cut- out stage following a freshet. |
