Show 3373 Nims- D 1398 All of the boats didn't do that; the boats in the lead would do that, and the others would attempt to steer clear of it by trying to find another current, or a current, in another place. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q How many boats were there, Mr. Nims? A We started with six. Q What did the boats draw, -- how much water did they draw? A When we started from Greenriver they drew within three or four inches of the gunnel; after going a mile we found the boat a were too heavily loaded, and we pulled ashore and made a raft, and in each off the five boats we had a zinc container in which photographic stock perishable food was placed and sealed, and these five containers were taken out of the boats and placed on that raft, and the raft was towed by the cooks in the sixth boat. THE SPECIAL MASTER: All right. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Did you encounter any difficulties in Stillwater canyon? A The upper end of it we did, with sand and small rapids. Q After you came out of Stillwater canyon and from then on down to the head of the cataracts, did you encounter any difficulties? A No. |
